The return of the Suez Canal route draws attention; CMA CGM takes the lead in adjusting container ship routes.

2025-12-13

On December 12, 2025, it was announced that the return of the Suez Canal Red Sea route has become a focal point of discussion in the global shipping industry. Hapag Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen made it clear on the same day that there is currently no clear timetable for resuming the use of the Suez Canal, and the return operation will gradually advance. After the resumption of navigation, a transition period of 60-90 days is needed to adjust the logistics network to avoid congestion risks.

Previously, due to attacks by Houthi militants in Yemen, most shipping companies were forced to detour around African routes. At present, there are positive signals in the industry dynamics: Hapag Lloyd and Maersk continue to monitor the safety situation in the Red Sea, and Daffy Shipping has announced that its INDAMEX route (between India, Pakistan, and the east coast of the United States) will fully switch to the Suez Canal, becoming an important breakthrough for container ships to return to the Red Sea route on a large scale. Data shows that the traffic volume in the Mandeb Strait has rebounded to the highest level since January 2024, laying the foundation for the resumption of air routes.
